The Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) reiterated its optimism that the national upstream oil and gas industry will remain competitive.

Despite the current global challenges, the need for energy security, and the energy transition agenda, IPA Vice President Ronald Gunawan stated that national energy security remains a strategic agenda for the government and industry, with long-term targets supported by appropriate policies and a competitive investment climate.

Ronald stated that the national production target of 1 million barrels of oil per day and 12 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day is an ideal that reflects Indonesia's commitment to energy independence.

"We view these targets as positive aspirations. What's most important is the government's roadmap to achieve them, particularly through accelerated exploration and development of new fields," Ronald said in a statement on Monday (January 26, 2026).

According to him, most operating oil and gas fields in conventional areas such as Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan have experienced declining production, making exploration key to the industry's sustainability.

Ronald also highlighted that in recent years, investor interest in Indonesia's upstream oil and gas sector has begun to show a recovery trend.

The return of several international companies and the increasing interest of new players, he continued, reflects growing confidence in the stability of Indonesia's investment climate.

Ronald stated that oil and gas investment is long-term and highly dependent on fiscal certainty, regulatory stability, and security guarantees.

"Indonesia has competitive advantages in the form of national stability, the availability of natural resources, and high-quality human resources," he said.

Teresita Listyani, IPA Convex 2026 Chairperson, stated that the 50th IPA Convex is not just a historical celebration, but a momentum for reflection and action to shape the future of Indonesia's energy industry.

With the theme "50 Years of Energy Partnership: Shaping the Next Era for Advancing Growth," IPA Convex 2026 will be a strategic platform for policy dialogue, exchange of ideas, and cross-stakeholder collaboration.

"IPA Convex 2026 is designed to encourage real solutions to industry challenges, from investment and technology to the energy transition," said Teresita.

He added that participation in the IPA Convex has shown an increasing trend year after year, both in terms of the number of delegates, participating countries, exhibitors, and journalists.

The IPA emphasizes the strategic role of the media as a partner in conveying balanced and constructive information about the upstream oil and gas industry.

The IPA hopes that the series of activities leading up to the 50th IPA Convex will strengthen public understanding that the upstream oil and gas industry continues to play a vital role in supporting energy security, economic growth, and national development amidst evolving global dynamics.
