IGS Interview with IGU Magazine Gas Transition
September 2025
The interview underscored strong momentum in CCS development driven by collaboration between government, state-owned enterprises, and international energy companies. Indonesia currently has 19 CCS/CCUS projects, including advanced initiatives such as the Asri Basin CCS Hub led by Pertamina and ExxonMobil. Recent regulatory milestones—Presidential Regulation No.14/2024, MEMR Regulation No.16/2024, and Government Regulation No.28/2025—have placed Indonesia among the leading CCS regulatory frameworks in Southeast Asia, providing greater certainty for investors and project developers.
Beyond CCS, the discussion addressed Indonesia’s gas supply outlook and structural challenges. Gas production is expected to increase from 2027–2028 as new projects come onstream, reinforcing gas as a key transition fuel toward Net Zero 2060. However, infrastructure gaps, complex licensing, and domestic supply imbalances remain critical issues. Strengthening fiscal incentives, accelerating infrastructure development, and prioritizing domestic gas allocation were emphasized as essential steps to ensure energy security while supporting long-term decarbonization goals.

In an interview with IGU Magazine – Gas in Transition, Aris Mulya Azof, Chairman of the Indonesian Gas Society (IGS), highlighted Indonesia’s growing strategic role in the regional energy transition, particularly its ambition to become a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) hub in Asia. Backed by vast geological storage potential and a strategic location near major emitters such as Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, Indonesia is well positioned to support cross-border decarbonization efforts while attracting international investment into its emerging carbon management ecosystem.
