Indonesia’s Geological Agency (Badan Geologi) under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has launched an airborne survey in the Lariang Basin (West Sulawesi) and the Enrekang area (South Sulawesi) to identify sedimentary-basin potential and open new opportunities for oil and gas exploration. The program focuses on acquiring Full Tensor Airborne Gravity Gradiometry (FT/AGG) data to improve subsurface imaging resolution and, in turn, strengthen investor interest in these two “prospective basins.”
Operationally, the survey covers roughly 33,000 kilometers of flight lines and uses two aircraft modes: fixed-wing planes for relatively flat terrain and helicopters for hilly or more complex topography. The Geological Agency estimates the work can be completed in about 32–35 days, provided weather conditions remain supportive and there are no safety incidents.
The choice of Lariang and Enrekang is also tied to regional context, including the proximity of the proven Sengkang Basin to the south, which already produces gas and supplies electricity in South Sulawesi. Officials hope the higher-quality subsurface data will increase the attractiveness of upstream work areas, accelerate investment decisions, and ultimately support new oil or gas discoveries for Sulawesi and Indonesia, in line with the government’s broader energy security agenda.
