International Gas Union Vice President Andreas Stegher said it is crucial to move faster and deeper to accelerate the decarbonization of the global energy system. Gas is not here to compete with new and renewable energy (NRE), but to complement it.
"According to the International Energy Agency, by 2024, 40% of the increase in global energy demand will be met by natural gas, making it the number one energy source," said Andreas Stegher in a press release on Tuesday (June 24, 2025).
At the same time, Andreas continued, we must continue on the path to reducing emissions, through concrete steps that go beyond targets, by utilizing all available solutions. The gas sector, along with all relevant technologies—natural gas, green gas, and innovative solutions—is crucial to keeping pace and accelerating this energy transition.
"The gas industry is a crucial part of the solution towards a low-carbon future by providing the cleanest, most affordable, and most reliable fossil fuel source available today," he said.
This was conveyed in connection with the implementation of IndoGAS 2025. This event returns as a biennial strategic forum that brings together leaders from government, state-owned enterprises, industry players, academics, and international partners to discuss policy directions, market opportunities, and collaborative strategies towards a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable energy system. Amidst the challenges of the global energy transition, this conference serves as a crucial platform for strengthening shared understanding and promoting the role of gas in future energy systems.
A press release sent by the Indonesian Gas Society (IGS) stated that in the global effort to encourage a cleaner energy transformation, the Asia-Pacific region, including Indonesia, faces complex challenges. Among them is how to provide low-emission, reliable, and affordable energy. In this context, natural gas is no longer viewed as a temporary solution, but rather as part of the main energy transition strategy.
Gas is not intended to compete with new and renewable energy (NRE), but rather to complement it. With its advantages of operational flexibility, relatively quick implementation times, and infrastructure adaptable to future technologies, gas holds a strategic role as a supporter of the continuously transforming national energy system.
IGS stated that Indonesia has set a long-term target of achieving net-zero emissions between 2050 and 2060. This commitment is designed to align with the targets of sustainable economic growth and expanding equitable energy access to all regions, including the 3T (disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost) regions.
The HSD conversion program at 41 gas-based power plants, which began in March 2025, is a concrete step demonstrating how gas can strengthen the national energy system. With better cost efficiency and shorter construction times than large-scale renewable energy projects, this program can close the supply gap, especially in regions with limited energy access. Furthermore, additional power plants will be built based on the availability of gas supply and infrastructure.
Furthermore, the gas infrastructure currently under construction—such as FSRUs and gas pipelines—is being prepared with a long-term vision, ensuring compatibility with hydrogen and CCS technologies. In other words, gas is not only part of a medium-term solution but is also designed to support and accompany the full transition to a clean energy system.
